Birthstone of the Month

Pearl: The Birthstone of June

What are Pearls
Shelled mollusks (aka. Oysters) produce pearls in their interior shell. It is produced when a grain of sand irritates the lining of the shell. Pearls are primarily composed of calcium carbonate.

A Brief History
Pearls were used by the Romans and Egyptians as decorations, signifying there riches. Pearls have since been popular and finding a natural Pearl has become rare and special. In ancient Mythology the pearl has been connected to the moon mainly because of its soft glowing appearance and the belief that pearls were formed from the teardrops of the moon that fell into the sea. The pearl, throughout history, has also come to symbolize various traits though to reflect those individuals born in the month of June. Such virtues include purity, wisdom, charity and loyalty.
Pearls at Driftwood:
Here at Driftwood we carry the line of Laine Benthall. Her collection consists of beautiful  sterling silver, pearls, and semi-precious stones. Laine currently resides in Honolulu Hawaii, bringing the work of one island to another. Laine is inspired by the patterns and shapes found in nature. "I find beauty of nature to be pure and immaculate. I aim to capture and express the universal beauty through my craft."

Stop in and check out the pearls, maybe a gift for all those June babies...

Featured Artist of the Day: Owner's Pick

Hawkhouse (Raw Mineral Jewelry):

How it's made:
Each piece is affixed to a piece of conductive metal, usually recycled copper ring or jump ring. The stone is then painted with a very thin layer of conductive paint, made of fine silver. The piece is then submerged in an electrochemical solution that is saturated with copper. When hooked up to power, copper molecules flow through the solution and land in the conductive paint and copper ring. The longer the piece is left in the solution, the thicker the coating becomes. Most pieces are submerged for 6-24 hours. The piece is then de-burred, tumbled, blackened with a sliver of sulfur and buffed to give give it a polished finish.

Why Sam Chose It:
Hawkhouse is different and organic looking. The process of creation involves science making it unlike that of anything else we carry in the store. Because it is a technique Sam didn't learn in school it fascinates her.

Hawkhouse Trunk Show:
Please Join us in celebrating July 4th with local jewelry designer Hawkhouse at Driftwood on Circuit Ave. in Oak Bluffs! Trunk Show will be displayed all day! Come by and meet Jessica the Mastermind behind this fabulous jewelry.
There will also be a reception in the afternoon from 4pm-8pm with light  hors d'oeuvres and refreshments.

Our Story

How Driftwood Came to Be....

Hi my name is Samantha Church and this is my story of how Driftwwod Jewelry came to be. I went to SCAD and majored in metals and jewelry. After working at Claudia's for 11 years I decided to venture out and produce my own work. In doing this I found there was many talented local artist without a place to sell and show there pieces. Driftwood opened May 1st and has grown since. Currently we have 30 local artist and we feature 4 of my college classmates collections  from SCAD. The store is a collaboration of different styles offering a variety of pieces ranging in prices big to small providing something for everyone. We're everchanging adding new artists daily.
