Pearl: The Birthstone of June
What are Pearls?
Shelled mollusks (aka. Oysters) produce pearls in their interior shell. It is produced when a grain of sand irritates the lining of the shell. Pearls are primarily composed of calcium carbonate.
A Brief History:
Pearls were used by the Romans and Egyptians as decorations, signifying there riches. Pearls have since been popular and finding a natural Pearl has become rare and special. In ancient Mythology the pearl has been connected to the moon mainly because of its soft glowing appearance and the belief that pearls were formed from the teardrops of the moon that fell into the sea. The pearl, throughout history, has also come to symbolize various traits though to reflect those individuals born in the month of June. Such virtues include purity, wisdom, charity and loyalty.
